Antacids
are among the most widely used drugs. In patients with peptic ulcer
the presence of acid in the stomach is in part responsible for the
pain , which is a characteristic feature of the disease. This also
interferes with the healing of these ulcers. If antacids are to
be useful they should reduce gastric acidity and the action should
spread over as long a period as possible.
Both Magnesium trisilicate and Aluminium hydroxide have prolonged
acid neutralising effect and are the two most satisfactory antacids.
The two salts are not absorbed and produce no systemic effect.
Extract Belladonna blocks the action of vagus nerve, decreases the
secretion of acid and relieves pain by relieving the spasm. |
